As you may or may not know, Roadside Memorials or Highway Memorials are usually placed on the sides of roadside as a way to remember loved ones that tragically died or passed away in some kind of unexpected road related accident.  The location of the Roadside Memorial is usually the very spot or very very close to the spot where someones loved one had passed away.  The Roadside Memorial is a way to remember loved ones and also to show others literally that  death occurred at that location……hence, be careful and pay attention while on or near the road in any way.

Here’s an Article on How to make and build a Roadside Memorial Tribute and Roadside Memorial Tribute Ideas.

You may also find that owners of pets like cats and dogs may have built up small spots dedicated to their pet that may have died tragically on the roadways also.  We are not sure what the percentage of actual people to pets are though.  Many of you always ask about being able to post y our pets info on the roadside memorial registry……and yes you can also use this Roadside Registry to remember your dog and cat that has passed on a roadway so that they can be remembered..  You can also vote here with your thoughts on Roadside Memorials.

There is a lot or controversy on the Roadside Memorial or Highway Memorials due to the actual memorials usually being placed or set up illegally on public county or state land.  There are many articles out here on this argument and we have tried to capture a lot of them in their pure published form with credit given to the originally author.  This way you can see both sides of the fence when it comes to the issues in of and surrounding the Roadside Memorials.  Click here for a ton of Roadside Memorial Articles and information.

An overgrow Roadside Memorial Tribute cross set up against a stop sign.

This Roadside Memorial was on a little back road in Virginia in the Northern Neck and the name on the cross reads, Thomas Jones.  Now this roadside memorial was also propped up and not secured into the ground against a stop sign at a cross street.  One of the issues with roadside memorials is the upkeep and maintenance of the actual roadside memorial locations or spots.  As with this one, it is way over grown.  This roadside memorial cross is actually about 2 feet tall, so the grass is a good 12″ tall.  Many of the owners or somebody that personally knows the person that passed away will keep up with the roadside memorial.  But when they are not looked after, this can happen.  We would think that the state or county workers will soon come by and clean up this Roadside Memorial cross location.  But with that may come the destruction of the actual Roadside Memorial.  Maybe intentionally or accidentally.  But regardless, these kinds of situations can usually make for some hurt feelings and emotions if the Roadside Memorial were to get damaged or destroyed.  Here is some info on Roadside Memorial Tribute Controversy.

A small but simple white cross Roadside Memorial Tribute set off to the side of a roadway.
Super simple Roadside Memorials are often also seen.  This particular Roadside Memorial is super basic and unmarked.  Some family and friends choose to be simple for their own reasons.  Some could argue that this was the site of a loved pet that was hit by a vehicle or just a religious cross.  For the purpose of the roadside Memorial site,…well call it an official Roadside memorial from a very loved and remembered family member.  Just a very subtle memorial, very simple but gets the job done and the message across.

A nice Roadside Memorial Tribute in King George VA Virginia.
13 June 2018 and the result of a Motorcycle involved accident.
Check out the Turkey and Christmas Tree, that on its own just
makes you want to cry thinking about the loved ones that don’t have Steven Williams in their lives anymore missing those special family holidays.

Steven Williams 13 June 2018 Roadside Memorial Tribute in King George Virginia VA.

KING GEORGE, COUNTY, Virginia. — Steven Lynn Williams, 41, of Alexandria, was killed Wednesday night when the 2005 Honda motorcycle he was operating struck a 2017 Honda Accord driven by James Norman Rouse, 48, of King George, according to Virginia State Police.

“Rouse was traveling westbound on Route 3 and was turning onto Index Lane into the path of the motorcycle. Williams struck Rouse’s vehicle on the passenger side and as a result, Williams was thrown from the motorcycle. Unfortunately, Williams succumbed to his injuries at the scene,” Virginia State Police spokesperson Sgt. Keeli Hill said, “Rouse fled from the scene on foot and was eventually located and arrested at approximately 2:16 a.m.”

Ideas for Roadside Memorials and how to make them.

A Roadside Memorial Tribute set up in one of Virginia’s smaller back roads.
Roadside Accidents don’t care the size of the road as you can see here.

Yes you have seen them on the side of a back country roadside or along a major Highway Interstate like I95.  These are the Roadside Memorials that we all see every now and then.  These are shrines or memorials built and constructed to honor someones loved one or ones.  More often than not it is a death from a vehicle related accident of some kind.  Roadside Memorials have been set up and placed on the sides or highways, byways, roadways roadsides etc since humans have traveled be it on foot or on an animal.  Here is a link to a bunch of Roadside Memorial Tributes Articles.

And with that, death in some way has and would occur.  Back in the day, the bodies would literally be buried where they lay and died with some sort or memorial to mark the spot or the “Roadside Memorial”.  And so this tradition is still carried on today around the world.  If for some reason you have NOT see any of these Roadside Memorials.  Just keep a closer eye on the side of the road and you will see your 1st and not the last Roadside Memorial built and erected by somebody that wanted to show their honor of the Roadside Memorial.  This my friends is the memories of a Roadside Memorial Tribute and what they are.

Shown here is another Roadside Memorial.  Basic in its own way with a few small white angle statues, a USA flag and a white cross with the name Mark Lambert and RIP on the top of the Roadside Memorial cross….. but so powerful at the same time.  This Roadside Memorial is also situated around a fallen tree stump.  Just wondering if this Roadside Memorial was placed here due to the actual tree or stump or that it was just a good area very very close to the accident site allowing the stump to protect the Roadside Memorial in some way.  Are Roadside Memorials like this allowed to to stay up and left alone legally?

The above Roadside Memorial was built and put up in remembrance for a family pet dog.  Very simple and sweet.

Roadside, Highway or Roadway Memorial is a marked and decorated shrine if you will that is built in a way that usually commemorates the spot or a site where a person usually died tragically and more often than not, suddenly and unexpectedly away from home on a roadway or roadside or high way. Unlike a grave yard where loved ones are typically buried and remembered, roadside memorials showcase the site headstone or memorial set up which marks where a body was very close to when they passed away.  Ever seen a white bike or bicycle painted on the side of a roadside?  What is this White Ghost Bike Roadside Memorial?

This Roadside Memorial looks more like a Grave Yard but It is so close to the side
of a road sitting alone so innocent and peaceful that we’ll call it a Roadside Memorial.
No church or building, just several headstones back from the lat 1800’s.
